Cool links for Tuesday: Science Fiction to Science Fact

If you’ve been following my blog, you know how I like to chat up how science fiction turns into fact.  Today I wanted to post a few amazing links to things that  make the science fiction fan in me squee with delight.

Let’s kick off with something that’s been making the rounds . . . but is no less awesome for having done so.

Back when Bowie wrote this . . . could we even have imagined an astronaut would perform a cover of the song from a space station?

Then there’s this amazing post on Buzzfeed:

27 Science Fictions that Became Science Fact in 2012

Just scroll through and check some of these out–exciting, scary, amazing . . .

And there’s a group that’s planning to go where no man has gone before . . . to Mars!  Whether it’s really possible or not remains to be seen, but the planning going into finally putting humans on the Red Planet is fascinating.

Mars One 2023: Inhabitants Wanted

A great way to turn this into a science fiction lesson with actual science for kids is to bring up some of these links, or others like them,  and then let kids brainstorm what the technical applications could be . . . or lead to.  Or, what the social implications could be, both the pros and cons.  Turn it into a writing lesson and have them create a story out of the future scenarios.

Enjoy!
